Relieve the Anxiety of Going Back to School No matter their age, the first day back to school, and the days leading up to it, can cause fear and anxiety. Here are some tips to make the first day back as stress free as possible: - Start a conversation in the days leading up to the first day of school, asking how he or she is feeling about returning to school. Explain to the youth that they are not alone, everyone is starting a new year and a new routine. Fill the youth with the excitement that surrounds the first day of school, highlighting the endless opportunities for learning and having fun and making new friends.
- Look for ways to ease the transition. Call the school ahead of time and arrange for an orientation day or an informal visit.
- Find a friend with whom your child can walk with to and from school and/or share a ride.
- Begin the routine of an earlier bed time now. It is also important to wake them earlier now, so rising early is less shocking to them on the first day of school.
- Establish a quiet place for the youth to do his or her homework. This will build their confidence, since they will be prepared for class.
- Be supportive and positive as the youth navigates the first week.
Instill in the youth as they leave you on the first day these three easy tips: be polite, listen well and be nice to others. At the end of the day when everyone arrives home from their busy schedules, connect with each other and share the events of the day. Find joy together in the journey! |
